- Abstract
The author considers the 1959 article written by Peter Munz about French Carolingian ruler Charlemagne, published in a previous issue of "History Today." He discusses the historiography of several events and incidents which occurred during Charlemagne's rule including the attempted assassination of Pope Leo III (750-816) in 799, Charlemagne and the Catholic Church, Charlemagne's campaigns against the Saxons beginning in the 770s, the court influence of monk and scholar Alcuin, and the crowning of Charlemagne as emperor by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day in 800.
