- Abstract
Popularity is affected by a variety of factors in primary schools such as academic achievement and ethnicity. The main goal of our study was to analyse whether the label Acting White exists in Hungarian schools among Roma students. We scrutinized whether Roma students penalize those in-group members whose academic achievement was high. The empirical basis of our research was the "Competition and negative networks" longitudinal dataset, which was collected by the MTA TK "Lendület" RECENS research group. This research followed 11 and 12-year old students for a four terms period. The survey was analysed using fixed and random effect models. We found a positive relationship between grades and popularity both within the majority group and within the minority group after ruling out the control variables. Therefore, there was no evidence for "Acting White" among Hungarian Romas. Furthermore, Romas received more friendship nomination in the whole class upon having good grades than non-Romas, which can motivate the minority group to study better. However, better grades were more positively evaluated for the non- Roma students within their in-group than for the Roma students, which may further increase inequalities.
