- Abstract
This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigates whether the adjunct application of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) results in a reduction of triple-walled bone defects. The study populations were adults (≥ 18 years) diagnosed with periodontitis. Patients in the experimental group received PRF in addition to standard treatment. CAL and PPD were measured before treatment and after at least three months. For the meta-analysis using a random effects model, the calculation was performed with SPSS. Mean differences with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Six studies were included. In the experimental group, significant effects were found in the splitmouth design for PPD (MD = -0.95; 95% CI -1.44; -0.45, p < 0.001) and CAL (MD = -0.88; 95% CI -1.66; -0.1, p = 0.03). There were no significant effects in one study in the split-mouth design. Only one study was available in the parallel-arm design, so that the subgroup analysis was omitted. This study showed no significant effects. There is considerable heterogeneity in PPD and CAL (I2 = 77 % and I2 = 81 %, respectively). Adjunct application of PRF in triple-walled bone defects leads to a significant reduction of PPD and CAL.
