- Abstract
In this exploratory, qualitative study, we aim to understand how museums, zoos, and aquariums in São Paulo engaged with their audiences during social isolation by live streaming activities during the initial quarantine phase. In particular, we carried out a content analysis of the nine live streams from scientific-cultural spaces transmitted by the social media of the São Paulo para crianças portal between March and June 2020. We analyzed the data with the support of the software Dedoose. The results indicate that the mediators repeated patterns of presential activities in these spaces and based their communicative processes predominantly on the exposition of information about the different elements of the activity. In the case of live streams in exhibitions with live animals, the most discussed contents were related to behavior, feeding, and habitat of the exhibited species. The activities transmitted by museums, on the other hand, addressed scientific concepts more frequently. Social media played a fundamental role not only in the dissemination and execution of activities, but also in expanding the public's access to leisure combined with educational experiences with science themes during the period of social isolation.
