- Abstract
The article discusses David Phillipson's exceptional contributions to archaeology, particularly African archaeology, including his research on the history of the Aksumite society and the evolution of ancient ecclesiastical structures in Ethiopia. Phillipson's emphasis on situating the Aksumite polity in its African and local contexts, his research on local creativity and continuity, and his examination of elite sites and the daily life of commoners have inspired generations of researchers.
