- Abstract
The identity of hearing children of deaf adults (CODA) is created at the interface between the Deaf and the hearing cultural context. Thus, due to unique experiences, it may be considered as a third culture, being a new quality in relation to the aforementioned contexts. This raises the question about the shape of CODA's identity as well as the differences between the deaf and the hearing. It is also interesting whether and how family situation is associated with the emergence of this kind of the cultural identity. So far CODA's experiences have been presented in descriptive and qualitative papers, but there was a gap in the quantitative approach. The presented study is an attempt to fulfil it, using the acculturation paradigm to describe the cultural identity of the Deaf. Intergroup comparisons were made to place CODA in a broader context. The analysis showed intergroup differences in the cultural identity, confirming assumed hypothesis. CODA most frequently presented bicultural identity, positioning this group between the hearing and the deaf in terms of acculturation to the Deaf culture. There were also significant relations between cultural identity and knowledge of sign language, as well as partial association with the style of the family of origin. The obtained results indicate further possible research directions.
