- Abstract
Background: A study by the National Institute of Mental Health found that approximately 50% of 9th-grade students in the Czech Republic show signs of impaired well-being. One of the approaches to measure and evaluate well-being is the self-assessment of individuals. Objective: A pilot study investigates the level of self-esteem in adolescents with regard to selected factors. Methods: Based on an anonymous questionnaire survey in 2022, a pilot sample of adolescents in the Moravian-Silesian Region (CR) was assessed using the Rosenberg self-assessment scale, gender, age, sleep duration and time spent on social networks. Mann-Whitney and chi-square tests were used for statistical evaluation (significance level 5 %), the influence of factors was assessed by binary logistic regression, the output was fully adjusted OR (Odds Ratio) with 95 % CI (confidence intervals). The Stata version 16 program was used for processing. Results: The sample consisted of 281 adolescents (54.5 % female, 45.5 % male) with an average age of 16.5 ± 1.5 years. It was found that 42.0 % of adolescents have very low self-esteem, 36.3 % of respondents spend 2 to 4 hours a day on social networks, more than 4 hours 29.2 %, more than half of respondents sleep more than 7 hours, less than 6 hours 15.3 %. Selfassessment was statistically significantly influenced by gender and sleep duration. Women have an approximately 3-fold increased risk (OR = 2.99; 95% CI: 1.74-5.13) versus men, and adolescents who sleep less than 6 hours have up to a 4-fold increased risk (OR = 4.01; 95 % CI: 1.61 - 10.00). Conclusion: Low self-esteem, which was found in 42 % of adolescents, can have a negative impact on their mental health. These results show the necessity of targeted prevention in the field of mental hygiene.
