- Abstract
This study seeks to identify the influence of visual culture, and specifically gender stereotypes in children's imagery. For this purpose, a sample of 224 drawings made by 72 participants between 5 and 12 years old in three primary schools in the Basque Country are qualitatively analyzed. The graphic results show clear sexist traits that that are not consistent with the verbal discourse of their authors on gender equality. The stereotypes identified in the drawings are totally in line with the idealized images of hegemonic male and female models in our visual culture. Therefore, it can be concluded that drawing is a useful tool for detecting stereotypes rooted in children's imagery, and that the school should provide students with visual references that help to broaden their perspective with respect to non-normative models while promoting diversity in the classroom.
