- Abstract
The article discusses British embassies to the Court of Pekin, or Beijing, China in 1793 and 1816 that attempted to establish permanent diplomatic relations. It examines the issue of trade with China and the treatment of British merchants there. The author notes that the first delegation was led by diplomat George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney, and the second by diplomat William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst. Gift giving and signs of respect demanded by the Chinese, including bowing and prostration, are also considered.
