- Abstract
The article discusses about the extended family program. This program has bought a deepened sense of "community" to many people. Pondering at the breakdown of the family, the restless mobility, and how a group of 400 people could achieve community, came the idea of creating small groups to be a little like the extended families of old. A committee spent months discussing the possibilities, seeking expert guidance, and trying to anticipate problems. A group of 12 people was formed to train them as "facilitators". The role of the facilitator was to help people become comfortable with each other, to help the acquaintance process begin, and to guide the family in setting up its own style and format. Special consideration was taken as not to bring professional counselors into this role, as the families were not intended to be therapy or encounter groups. The extended family program is still one of the few places where you need not be a part of any of the task or problem-centered groups. All that is required is a willingness to invest some time and energy in being with a small group of people, so that knowing and caring can develop.
