- Title
It Didn't Start with Proposition 187 One Hundred and Fifty Years of Nativist Legislation in California.
- Abstract
The author discusses contentious issues regarding illegal aliens and immigration law associated with the state of California. Particular attention is paid to Proposition 187, a ballot initiative approved by 59% of state voters but nullified by courts in 1994. The proposal would have denied public services such as non-emergency medical care and education to illegal aliens. The history of nativist legislation in California is discussed. The enactment of the Foreign Miners' Tax in 1950 is examined.
