- Abstract
Our chapter addresses the beer tent as a space of political possibility. The music played here, which is often unsuspicious from a political point of view, is part of an arrangement in the form of characteristic materialities. Our research illustrates the political use of this specific mode in the context of far-right populism by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its public election campaign events. We address this topic through a methodological approach that combines ethnographic work with in-depth group analyses of the music we found, which we address in terms of its affordances. The overall socio-material arrangement and its audiencing establish a specific mode of reception that tends to exclude ironic interpretations. In this way, the music heard at the publicly accessible locations makes it possible to transfer right-wing populist issues to broader realms of society. Finally, against this background, we argue for establishing the beer tent as a fruitful subject of popular music research.
