- Abstract
Summary A pilot program was initiated in April 1989 to evaluate the efficacy of biotelemetry techniques to monitor the spawning behavior of anadromous striped bass ( Morone saxatilis) in the Choptank and Nanticoke rivers, Maryland, USA. Four Choptank males (570-635 mmTL) and five females (660-1222 mm TL) were equipped with short-lived (< 1 yr), externally-attached radiotransmitters while seven females (770-1270 mm TL) from the Nanticoke received surgically-implanted transmitters lasting over one year. All fish were released within 30 min after transmitter attachment or implantation. Data for four Choptank males in 1989 indicated day-by-day movement between the freshwater spawning grounds and the brackish estuary proper, with a residence time in the spawning area for at least 30 days. Their cruising behavior implied that the brackish portion of the estuary (> 500 μS cm-1) is more important than appreciated, perhaps serving either as an intercept zone for females or as a recovery zone from osmoregulatory stress as the fish move into fresh water. Data for the Choptank and Nanticoke females in 1989 and 1990 indicated far less activity than males on the spawning grounds. Homing of > 40 % (3 of 7) of the radiotagged females to the Nanticoke in 1990 is evidence in favor of the hypotheses of seregated striped bass stocks in Chesapeake Bay, and annual iteroparity. Results further verified the vafidity of using biotelemetry to monitor the behavior of anadromous fishes. Management implications and recommendations for future research on striped bass are given.
