TEACHING NOTE: Gaining Voice through Silence.
- Authors
Kaufman, Peter
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of silence in creating an egalitarian classroom based on open, reflexive, and honest dialogue. It stated that silence conceal individual expression and prevents the collective production of knowledge. The author observed that students who may have to offer personal experiences and perspectives are often inhibited from sharing their wisdom with the class. It is concluded that the method of Silent Discussion contributes to breaking down the student-teacher contradiction and equalizing the construction of knowledge.
