- Abstract
This study investigates the opinions of the caregivers for the elderly about their problems. The sample of the study consisted of 172 caregivers for the elderly working in Ankara, voluntary to participate in the study. More than half (68.6%) of the caregivers were female. 32.6% of the caregivers were 34 years old or younger, 54.6% were high school graduates, and 10.5% were associate's degree graduates. 8.1% of the caregivers were contracted personnel, 91.9% worked for a private company and 88.6% were certified by public education centers. Among the problems of the caregivers participating in the study, a correlation was found for the statement that "the number of the elderly provided with care is high" (F=3,090, p<0.05) between those at the age of 34 and below and those at 45 and above and it was seen that as the caregiver got older, they start to consider the number of the elderly as a problem. Education status was found to have no effect on the problems about work environment (p>0.05). The effect of the number of the elderly provided with care on the problems of the caregivers was explored. For the statements "there is psychological pressure on the caregivers for the elderly" (F=9.629, p<0.01), "The legal rights for the caregivers for the elderly to lead a decent life are either denied or restricted" (F=5.970, p<0.01), there was a relationship between the caregivers with 25 and fewer elderly people and those with 51 and more elderly people. Moreover, a relationship was found between the caregivers with 25 and 50 elderly people and those with 51 and more elderly people. As a result, it is recommended that the working conditions of the caregivers working for various organizations should be improved, that they should be provided with continuous in-service training, and that public awareness should be raised by highlighting the significance of caregiving as a profession in the media, all of which will contribute to reducing the problems the caregivers encounter during their professional practice.
