Thailand: From Violence to Reconciliation?

- Abstract
The article discusses the political climate in Thailand, particularly the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) and its challenge against the government led by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. The UDD, known as red shirts, led a month long siege in May 2010 in which they occupied part of the city of Bangkok and they set fire to 39 buildings, including the Bangkok Bank. The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), known as the yellow shirts, and the ideological differences that separate them from the UDD are discusses as is the leadership of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the part that he played in Thailand's political upheaval. Other topics include economic conditions, the armed forces, democracy and Thailand's parliamentary government are also discussed.
