- Abstract
The venomous animals that most cause accidents in Brazil are bees, spiders, scorpions, stinging caterpillars, snakes and wasps. These accidents can result in medical emergencies, requiring immediate care to reduce the chance of complications. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile of accidents caused by venomous animals in 18 cities in southern Brazil and describe the clinical profile of these accidents in the city of Sarandi - RS. The study included municipalities belonging to the micro-region of Carazinho-RS, from 2015 to 2019 and evaluated data available in the National Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN), in addition to medical records at the Community Hospital in the municipality of Sarandi, RS, in same period. At all, 607 notifications of accidents involving venomous animals were found, with an increasing trend in the number of notifications over the years. Male individuals were the most affected (59.7%) and the predominant age group was between 20 and 64 years (71.8%). The most affected sites were the extremities (94%). The most reported symptom was pain. Given the number of accidents, the results corroborate the knowledge of the specific epidemiology of the region, together with the treatment adopted by physicians aiming at a better accident prognosis.
