English Law, Brahmo Marriage, and the Problem of Religious Difference: Civil Marriage Laws in Britain and India.

CHATTERJEE, NANDINI
- Abstract
The article presents an examination of changes in marriage laws in 19th century England and British India. It argues that these changes, as well as the development of civil marriage, were not established as part of a secularization movement, but rather they were made in an effort to provide a legal tool to Christians who were not members of the Anglican Church and wished to be married. This effectively increased the range over which civil marriage laws held power, but was not part of a secular movement.
