- Abstract
Light verbs are an important issue in Indo Aryan languages. Their function is to coordinate main verbs and form V1-V2 complex verbal constructions in which V1 is main verb and V2 is light verb. In complex verbal constructions light verbs do not express their lexical meaning but change the semantics of a sentence as a whole. This work differs from the positions of Bukhari (2009) and Butt and Ramchand (2003) in various aspects. In contrast to Bukhari's (2009) claim that V is a light verb in N +V or A + V constructions this paper shows that V is in fact a dummy verb. The distinction between a light verb and a dummy verb addressed in the work proves the claim. Similarly, highlighting some issues, this work also expresses a different view on Butt and Ramchand's (2003) three types of complex constructions. Almost all researchers claim that a light verb appears in sentence final position and takes tense morphology. Bukhari (2009) expresses a different opinion, namely that main verb can appear in sentence final position and take tense morphology. Some further facts are presented to support his argument. Finally, giving evidence, the paper brings into discussion some complex verbal constructions that contain two light verbs and a main verb. The appearance of two light verbs in imperative sentences is also interesting to discuss. This is a distinctive feature and has not been discussed elsewhere.
