Direct flights.
- Abstract
The article reports on a tourism agreement signed by the new president of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou, on June 13, 2008 allowing passenger aircraft to fly directly between the mainland and Taiwan. Initially, the agreement permits 36 charter flights to travel directly between five mainland and eight destinations in Taiwan every weekend. According to Xinhua News Agency that the number of flights will increase as demand increases. Almost all travelers between Taiwan and the mainland were routed through Hong Kong or Macao before the agreement took effect. Airport in Hong Kong currently handles approximately 80 percent of passengers between mainland and Taiwan, but this number could possibly drop due to the new weekend service.
