- Abstract
Since its independence, Mali hasn't been able to cope with its internal tensions. The government has cracked down on the Tuareg rebel groups for decades, and made them to believe in agreements to be improved their social and economic status. The unresolved socio-economic conflicts and the recurring severe drought have re-intensified the Tuaregs' desire for independence. The returning Tuaregs from the Libyan Civil War (2011) crossed the boarders with combat experience and a substantial quantity of arms to become the military force of the Malian uprising. As the greatest success of the uprising, the Tuareg rebels proclaimed the independence of Azawad. The Islamic radicals involved also in the uprising - because of their different goals - broke up with the Tuaregs. They turned against them, and extended their attacks towards the southern regions of Mali. The international community has condemned the events and the French military forces intervened in the conflict. Subsequently from African side, the ECOWAS forces entered the war, while the EU has set up a training mission in support of the Malian armed forces and the restoration of the internal security situation.
