- Abstract
The article discusses the archaeological response to the damage and destruction of cultural property caused by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami which struck Japan on March 11, 2011. The authors report that more than 700 designated national cultural properties are confirmed to have been damaged, including historic sites and buildings, artistic and archaeological artifacts, and museums and archives. Also discussed is the relationship between earthquakes and the archaeological record. In addition, the authors compare the response to the 2011 earthquake to that following the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake of 1995. Other topics addressed include the role played by the Consortium for Earthquake-Damaged Cultural Heritage (CEDACH) as well as the prospects for future responses.
