- Abstract
The article discusses the issues on the system for federally recognizing tribes and placing tribal lands into federal trusts in the U.S. by citing the case of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. Other topics include the interpretation of statutes defining tribal status and land, the Supreme Court ruling in the case Carcieri v. Salazar, and the provisions of the Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) over the responsibility of the Department of the Interior (DOI) on tribal recognition.
