- Abstract
In the following article, cases from school and classroom research will be used to show how a new qualitative method manages to obtain more objectified data – and thus more distanced from one’s own attribution – through a focussing movement, without anticipating the setting by the field. For this purpose, the method uses the addition of eye-tracking technology to videographic field access. This technology, known mainly from quantifying eyemovement research in psychology and psycholinguistics, has great innovative potential for ethnographic studies. The following article aims to exploit this potential by describing a new method in more detail: eye-viewing. In eye-viewing, focused videography (based on ethno graphic methods of video data collection) is supplemented by eye-tracking technology in such a way that “seeing through the eyes of others” is made possible. By combining recordings from video cameras and eye-tracking glasses, audiovisual data is produced that focuses much more strongly than before on the perspective of the respective actors and thus makes it accessible for analysis. This can make a contribution to the research of media practices in particular.
