- Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between property and stratification in two ways. firstly the distribution of wealth and its income; secondly the manner in which property and stratification are related. While the data point to the persistence of considerable inequalities in property and property income distribution, they also suggest that property is not an important source of direct in- come. The relationship between property and stratification is now mediated by the wage-form of appropriation. The effect of this is to displace class struggle to the market place, separating the political economy and system of stratification. The theoretical implications of this for both Weberian and Marxist class theory are discussed.
