- Abstract
This article reports that tissue engineering aims to grow tissue replacements by combining cells and matrices under defined laboratory conditions. The shortage of donor tissues and organs and the increasing demand for tissue repair from an aging population have catalyzed research in the field. Current therapeutic approaches with replacement tissues are rather empirical owing to the enormous complexity of the cells, scaffolds and stimuli that must be screened and the fact that the clinical problem is not always well articulated at the outset.
