- Abstract
The article presents a study on the cognitive style of university students in Manizales. Significant differences were found in test scores according to the university major, regardless of gender. The results have implications for constructing the student profile in each major. Other studies have shown differences in cognitive style between field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) individuals, but the results have not been consistent, and gender is not a reliable predictor of cognitive style. Another study conducted on university students in Manizales found significant differences between programs in terms of the tendency towards field dependence (FD) or field independence (FI). Law and marketing students showed a tendency towards FD, while psychology and medicine students showed a tendency towards FI. Additionally, it was found that program differences seem to incorporate initial differences between gender groups. Another study examined the relationship between cognitive style, gender, and the major pursued by university students in Manizales. Significant differences were found in cognitive styles between different majors, which may be related to the characteristics of each disciplinary field. Additionally, a slight association was observed between gender and cognitive style, but this association does not explain the differences between majors.
