- Abstract
This essay discusses the Gothic Revival architectural movement in Charleston, South Carolina. According to the authors, the Gothic Revival motif was considered to be the most distinguishable feature of Charleston homes during the antebellum era. Advocated by the Cambridge Camden Society, the Gothic Revival movement sought a return to Anglican ritual and symbolism. The authors comment on how the style was also used to express southern political ideologies and cultural preferences.
