- Abstract
This essay shows how G. W. M. Reynolds's experience directing the Paris Advertiser in 1836 proved central to his development as a writer and editor. In addition to providing new information about Reynolds's years in Paris, I show how this experience influenced the thematic direction his fiction would take. The story of Reynolds's career in Paris provides insight into the landscape of periodical literature available to English-speaking residents in the 1830s, including British journalists' struggle to break free from the dominance of the London journals and newspapers and create a distinct body of original work that would serve the interests of the expatriate community.
