- Abstract
An essay is presented which examines depictions of emigration and first-generation colonial life in mid-Victorian British periodicals published for the Christmas holiday. According to the author, these texts played a significant and cohesive role in registering the experience of emigration within the English national imaginary. Details on the short story "The Wreck of the Golden Mary" by Charles Dickens are presented. Other topics include frame stories and affective location.
