BRAKE, LAUREL
- Abstract
The article discusses serial supplements in Victorian periodicals and newspapers in the 19th century. Various types of supplements are discussed including advertising, maps, and illustrations. The author suggests that supplements had several roles, including to increase circulation and attract new readers, to foster loyalty in regular readers, and to draw attention to a cause or a theme associated with the journal within which the supplement is published. Examples of supplements discovered in various Victorian periodicals and newspapers are discussed including the Northern Star, the Quarterly Review, and the Illustrated London News.
