- Abstract
Archaeological excavations by Université Laval's prehistoric archaeology field school from 2007 to 2009 gathered information on three sites bordering marshy areas around the northern part of Lake Saint-Charles. As will be seen in this article, the sites were identified as short-term camps set up by small social units for exploiting local animal resources, particularly beaver. They yielded traces of human occupation dating from around the end of the Late Archaic period (ca. 3500 BP), as well as from the Late Middle Woodland (ca. 1500-1000 BP), Late Woodland (1000-450 BP) and historic periods. According to the supply sources of the lithic raw materials found in these camps, their occupants seem to have participated in the subarctic and St. Lawrence Valley interact ion spheres. This article will also present a few thoughts on the definition of small archaeological sites.
