- Abstract
The article analyzes how the landscape of the Curonian Spit was understood in Babickas' book "The Amber Seashore", what was important to the writer. Babickas described the place which was for many Lithuanians only "terra incognita". The Curonian Spit had no significance in Lithuanian literature for a very long time as compared with other landscapes, for example, the Nemunas and the Neris. The focus is made on the literary description of the Curonian Spit in Independent Lithuania, when the first and second editions of the album "The Amber Seashore" were published. Babickas was interested in its specific nature, people, and cultural traditions. he writer tried to render his individual emotional and intellectual experience and to revive the cultural memory of this place. The landscape of the Curonian Spit was represented not only by written texts, but also by artistic photographs. his album, which had even three editions (1932, 1938 and 1958), could be a good example for other Lithuanian authors who wrote about the Curonian Spit later.
