- Abstract
This paper aims to provide a historiographical overview focusing on the studies of Medici Florence conducted over the past 50 years, considering only those works that have more or less directly addressed aspects of the city's religious history. The second part of the paper will outline some paths of research on the basis of a small but very significant sample of published and unpublished sources. The chronological terms chosen cover the period from the late fifteenth century to the threshold of the eighteenth century; particular attention is given to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as being one of the most emblematic periods of deep transformation in the religious experience of Florence, from the 'religione delle buone opere' through the spirituality of the quietist mystique at the end of the seventeenth century.
