- Abstract
The two-staged suspension culture system was used because the cell growth was non-associated with shikonin biosynthesis. The growth period of Arnebia euchroma cells in suspension culture was about 21 d and the shikonin biosynthesis period was about 16 d. The negative correlation between conductivity and biomass existed during the cell growth stage. With increase of the biomass, conductivity of the culture medium decreased; therefore, the biomass could be predicted by measuring the conductivity. During the cell growth stage, the linear correlations between biomass and the utilizations of nitrate, ammonia and soluble sugar were perfect. The cell yield coefficients based on nitrate, ammonia and soluble sugar were 8.64, 104.3 and 0.68 g/g respectively.
