- Abstract
The negation represents a crucial step in the acquisition of language, allowing the child to place himself in the interaction, before the apparition of the marks of the first person. If the acquisition of negation has already been described in a detailed way, most models have an approach limited to morpho-syntactic, neglecting prosody. In this paper, we present the longitudinal data of a monolingual French girl recorded from 14 to 28 months old in spontaneous interaction with her parents. The prosodic analysis of all the occurrences of "non" show that the first "non" appear at 14 months old in a reduplicated form and are exaggerated in the prosodic level. Only later, at 19 months old, "non" appeared isolated or inside an utterance (in pre or post sentential position). Interestingly, the prosodic form of those productions changed gradually over time. First, from 14 to 21 months old, they were mainly produced with prosodic exaggeration, rising fo contour and increasing syllabic duration. From 22 to 25 months old, the pattern of the fo contour changed to rising-falling contours and then, from 26 to 28 months old, to flat and decreasing contours, with a shorter syllabic duration, making it close to the adult form in French. Such a change in prosodic form seems to reflect better linguistic skills in the expression of negation from 25 months on.
