The mother of all wikis.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the Encyclopedia of Life. In 2007, the world's leading scientific institutions revealed that they were launching the encyclopedia, which is a global effort to document all 1.8 million named species of animals, plants, and other forms of life on Earth. For the first time, scientists, students, and citizens will have multimedia access to all known living species. The Field Museum of Natural History, Marine Biological Laboratory, Harvard University, Biodiversity Heritage Library, and the Smithsonian Institution are involved in the project, bringing together species and software experts worldwide. The author reports that the effort was motivated by a $10 million grant from various foundations and is designed to serve as a global model for biodiversity and conservation.
