- Title
OGGU KATHA.
- Abstract
The article discusses the historical background of the Indian ballad "Oggu Katha." "Oggukatha" is said to be first performed by the Kurmas or Yadavas who devoted themselves to the singing of ballads in praise of Indian deity Lord Siva. "Oggu Katha" is so named because of the instrument called "Oggu," which was used at the beginning of each story and at the marriage festivals of Mallanna. Meanwhile, Oggu performers in the modern time, usually a team consists of four to six members, narrate the stories of Mallanna and Beerappa as well as the Shakti ballads of Yellamma.
