The article examines the critical rejection of abstract or avant-garde film aesthetics in France during the interwar period by surrealist groups. Topics covered include rehumanization of art to picture the modern perception through the formally realist means, the rise of inter-war mimetic realism, history of Surrealism, role of debates surrounding film and photography in the development of the Surrealist object and the articulation of the avant-garde that resisted organizational structure.
