- Abstract
This article offers information on the founding of the Pasteur Institute in France, as well as its day-to-day functioning around 1900. The production of diphtheria serum in France was dominated by the institute, which equipped a facility at Garches to produce the antitoxin on the large scale. The serum production facility of the institute was located in a military stable that had been made available to Louis Pasteur for his rabies research. Also discussed are the process for producing the serum for treating diphtheria, the routine at Garches, the evaluation of the serum and the results of the evaluation.
