- Abstract
Introduction: Physical activity (PA) is widely accepted as being beneficial to the health of a person and has been used to boost cardiovascular functioning, rehabilitation from an injury or a disability, and management of chronic diseases. Review of literature reveals that even with the documented benefit of PA, there is a decline of PA as children progress from childhood to adolescent with more decline for adolescents with disabilities. This study aimed at investigating determinants of PA participation among school going adolescents with disabilities in Kenya. Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was used to identify key determinants of participation for adolescents with disabilities. A total of 200 youths from various school setups were assessed, 50 games teachers and 25 school administrators were involved. Data was collected through questionnaires and interview schedules and analyzed using the SPSS 19.0 program. Results: Most participants did not meet the WHO recommended guidelines of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Girls had significantly lower levels of participation than boys (p < .01). Several factors were noted to influence participation: gender, type of disability, accessibility, availability of equipment, support from peers and teachers, family SES and cultural beliefs. Conclusion: Adapted facilities, teachers and caregivers in addition to structured sports program may be useful in enhancing PA levels.
