- Abstract
The article discusses the centrality of female characters in the early modern period of English commercial plays of writer John Lyly in contrast to the fictional stage worlds of Shakespeare. It is noted in the works of R. Warwick Bond, Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen that Lyly sought to flatter Queen Elizabeth in such plays as "Campaspe," "Sappho and Phao" and "Endymion." An article by Mary Bly on renaissance drama is cited for his exposure of gender possibilities on the stage.
