- Abstract
Some commentators have been tempted in such a way by several superficial similarities between Ludwig Wittgenstein's notion of "certainty" and John Henry Cardenal Newman's concept of "assent", that they have argued that these terms were used identically by both authors. Though these notions share interesting characteristics when they are confronted with the problem of radical skepticism -above all, their resistance to skeptical doubts-, in this paper it is held that the relation of both notions to action and truth shows the different use Wittgenstein and Newman made of them.
