- Abstract
A major leak of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) occurred from the gas carrier ship Ennerdale while cargo sampling operations were being carried out at Fawley Marine Terminal (FMT) in Hampshire, England. The leak was sealed after 29 hours, but an estimated 66 tonnes of propane were released to atmosphere. Lessons learned relate to sampling procedures; use of screw couplings; testing of ESD valves; requirement for ESD valves to be closable manually. A published report on the incident by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch in 2006 presents full details of the incident, causes and investigation, together with recommendations. This article summarises the main points.
