Title
Animal communication: Warning wings.
Abstract
The article highlights a study which investigated that the sound made by birds' feathers may create a useful warning signal when they flock together. This was observed when researchers studied the crested pigeons, Ocyphaps lophotes, which makes a fluttering metallic sound when they flap their wings. They examined that calm take-offs had no effect, but recordings of alarmed birds frequently sent flocks scattering.
