- Title
Infectious diseases: An ill wind for wild chimps?
- Authors
Weiss, Robin A.; Heeney, Jonathan L.
- Abstract
The article reports on a study which reveals that small groups of wild chimpanzees naturally infected with simian immunodeficiency virus ( SIVcpz) do develop hallmarks of AIDS in East Africa. It states that SIV-infected animals of the eastern subspecies of chimpanzee in the Gombe National Park in Tanzania have a markedly higher death rate than non-infected animals. Moreover, this study indicates that SIVcpz causes AIDS-like disease in a subspecies of chimpanzee that is already endangered in the wild.
