- Title
Conservation: The genome of the American West.
- Authors
Marris, Emma
- Abstract
The article discusses genetic diversity and how managing the genome rather than the animal could be used as a model for the conservation of larger animals such as the American bison. An example is given of geneticist James Derr who started a movement to preserve the genetic integrity of the American bison which had been bred with domestic cattle in an effort to save it from extinction. Topics include an overview of the history of the American bison and the effects of hunting on the population, conservation efforts by wildlife biologists, and Derr's work with the bison genome including his efforts regarding the preservation of the original species. Also discussed are the defining features of wild bison and commercially bred stocks.
