Experts call for active surveillance of drug safety.
- Authors
Wadman, Meredith
- Abstract
The article reports that experts called for the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have a new system to monitor the safety of marketed drugs in the light of FDA warnings on the use of two classes of drugs. Comments of Mark McClellan, a former FDA commissioner, on drug-safety measures are included. The idea of data mining of existing health record databases, which drug makers also support, as an active surveillance system to pick up early warnings of adverse side effects is discussed.
