- Abstract
Among climatic elements, temperature is of paramount importance, hence highlighting the necessity of studying the effects of temperature on the growth of organisms, especially plants. The main purpose of this paper is the analysis and zoning of degree days during the growing season at base temperatures of 5 and 10 °C using heat index at 31 synoptic stations in Iran during a 23-year common statistical period (from 1988–1989 to 2009–2010). For calculation of heat units, first, the growing season length at temperature thresholds of 5 and 10 °C was obtained and after calculating heat units during the growing season, the zoning map of heat units and growing season length was prepared in GIS software. Accordingly, heat units of the growing season at base temperatures of 5 and 10 °C could be divided into five categories. The heat units of the growing season at a base temperature of 5 °C showed a rising trend from the south to the north and from the west to the east of the country. At a base temperature of 10 °C, heat units declined from the south to the north and augmented from the west to the east.
