- Abstract
The book "Chernobyl Children" by Melanie Arndt examines the effects of the Chernobyl disaster on an entire generation, particularly on the affected children. It analyzes the social and political consequences and considers the role of civil society actors and transnational networks. The book provides a comprehensive depiction of the recuperation stays of Belarusian "Chernobyl children" in the United States between 1991 and 2008 and sheds light on the different experiences and perceptions of the involved actors. Conflicts within the aid movement and the asymmetric distribution of roles between helpers and disaster victims are also addressed. The study focuses on the effects of the Chernobyl disaster on children and excludes European Chernobyl initiatives and Lukashenko's policies in Belarus. The author hopes for further studies on this topic.
